Thirty-two Companies Make 2003 Fast Track Listing

San Antonio continues to show signs of recovery after a year of economic challenges took its toll on a number of industry sectors.

Leading the way are the companies making the Business Journal’s “Fast Track.” “Fast Track” is a special publication listing some of the city’s fastest growing companies. Success stories in a variety of industries can be found among 32 firms appearing in our 2003 listing.

Millennium Packaging LP, a distribution packaging and supplies firm, recorded a healthy 777.23 percent increase in gross revenues over the three most recent fiscal years (2000-2002). High-tech firms made a good showing in the listing with Web housing company Rackspace Managed Hosting tallying an 83.46 percent growth rate for the same time period and Internet security firm SecureInfo Corp. producing a growth rate of 166.77 percent.

The companies listed in this special section were identified through an extensive surveying process.

The results of the survey were tallied by certified public accounting firm Carneiro, Chumney & Co. LC.

To determine the winners, Carneiro, Chumney ranked the companies who responded to the survey by their percentage of revenue growth over a three-year period (2002-2002).

Those winners were then placed in revenue categories and published in this section.

Only those companies returning a questionnaire were considered for ranking in this section. Notice inviting companies to submit a questionnaire were published over several weeks in the Business Journal.

Companies that did not respond to this years Fast Track survey, or who were unaware of this special section, are encouraged to contact us so that we can include your firm on the mailing list for 2004 Fast Track publication.

In addition to the Fast Track listing in this section are a number of business resources and columns to help aspiring businesses get off the ground and to help established businesses grow.

To produce a product of this magnitude requires the support of the business community. We appreciate the firms that took the time to respond to our call for entries and who provided the financial information necessary to compile our Fast Track listing.

Other key players in this project include the co-sponsors of Fast Track: Carneiro Chumney, Humana, Jackson Walker LLP, Well’s Fargo, and KTSA Radio.

The 2003 Fast Track winners will be honored at a special awards luncheon in August. To make reservations or for more information, call the Business Journal at 341-3202.

We salute our 2003 Fast Track companies and the contributions you are making to the local economy.

Supermarket Niche
by Tamarind Phinisee

Managing Partner Robert Knoll says he knows why his company, Millennium Packaging LP, has continued to grow by leaps and bounds. It comes down to a commitment to quality and customer service, he says.

Millennium is a wholesale distributor of packaging and supplies to supermarkets and food-service operations in the United States and Mexico.

Knoll says that he and his business partner, Greg Payne, combined their experience in the supermarket and food service packaging and supplies industry to form the company back in 2000.

“My partner and I combined have had about 30 years of experience in this business. So we understand better than anybody this business in our area—San Antonio and Texas,” Knoll says. “We’ve grown quite rapidly and we’re real pleased with our growth.

“We’ve started to expand and now have a company in Mexico that distributes (products),” he says, adding that it has done business in Mexico since the company’s inception.

One of the company’s biggest strategies he says was to procure and sell products to Mexico and vice versa, using previous business connections from when he used to live there.

“Mexico has started producing packaging that is acceptable in price and quality to the U.S. market,” he says. “We’re now working with them to break in the U.S. market.”

As always, Knoll says, the company is always looking for more ways to improve.

We have to differentiate ourselves from the competition . . . and not just compete on price, but also on service,” he says.

One of the ways it’s done this is by investing heavily in technology and streamlining its distribution system to make it more efficient and drive down costs. As a result, Knoll says about 75 percent of its business is now Web-based.

“We try to reduce the cost of distribution so we can offer more competitive products to our customers,” he adds.

A Cleaning Hand
Millennium Packaging opens new business, sells disposable products
By Leigh Jones-Staff Writer

Millennium Packaging makes products people throw away every day, but owners Bob Knoll and Greg Payne do not take it personally.

They are happy to see their plates, cups, utensils and “to go” containers tossed into the trash - they have a warehouse full of replacements ready for delivery.

Millennium Packaging provides disposable products to the food service industry and supermarkets chains.

H-E-B and Super S are two of their largest customers.

“Our stuff is all over the produce, bakery and deli sections,” Knoll said. “Who provides all the plastic bags at the checkout counter? That’s us.”

Millennium packaging also provides disposable gloves, aprons, hair nets and cleaning supplies.

Although the company is new to New Braunfels, Knoll and Payne are confident they will fit right in.

“We really want to get involved in the community and we’re looking forward to meeting other business owners in the area,” Payne said.

The two partners moved their warehouse and administrative offices to New Braunfels from north San Antonio to be closer to the H-E-B distribution warehouse in San Marcos.

They also have warehouses in Houston and Lubbock.

Their new 53,500 square feet facility, located on Loop 337 south just off Interstate 35, is almost twice as large as their old warehouse, but Knoll said they have plans to expand in the future.

“We hope to build warehouses in New Braunfels three and four times this size, and our goal is to hire locally,” he said.

Not long after Knoll and Payne started the company in 2000, Millennium Packaging was rated as San Antonio’s fastest growing business by the San Antonio Business Journal.

Currently, the company has 20 employees, two of which they hired after coming to New Braunfels.

Knoll said he hoped as their business grew, their product line would expand.

“We hope to start serving smaller, local restaurants,” he said. “A barbecue place would make the perfect customer.”
